"I often tell my children what a great childhood I had and how fortunate I was to grow up in New York City. Being exposed to all types of people and cultures during childhood is not something many people experience. I think it makes us more flexible as adults. Does anyone remember that Jane Street was a "Play Street" with a candy store right on the corner? We even had a permit to use a sprinkler on the fire hydrant. Of course, the sprinkler was usually removed! Jumping rope was a big game on Jane Street for the girls and I remember the boys playing stick ball and marble games. I remember playing hop scotch on Jane Street with Sharon Fishel, Pat Schaffer and Annette LaGarde. Annette and I used to collect soda bottles. If we found enough, we would immediately go to Lucy's deli and get hero sandwiches. I haven't had a sandwich that good since! Another memory is roller skating with Alice Upton. Remember how great the hill on West Fourth Street was for skating?" Bettyann Cresci Taylor |
