"Memories: A play street called 21st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues... stick ball, box ball, stoop ball, funneling water from the pump through a beer can with no top or bottom, dragging unwilling victims under that same pump, knucks card game, playing kick-the-can, Black Tom, ring-a-leevio, 3 steps to Germany, Indian on the Warpath, Johnny Ride the Pony, Hot Beans with a belt, dodge ball at P.S.11, flipping and trying to match baseball cards, Davy Crockett orange and green backed bubblegum cards, the Davy Crockett Craze of 1954-55 when every snow drift became The Battle of the Alamo and every kid wanted to be Davy, swinging Old Betsy, last man standing, pea shooters, scooters made from wooden milk crates and disassembled roller skates and wooden handle bars bedecked with raccoon tales/marble games in which you won 5 marbles if you were skilled enough to roll 1 of your marbles into the hole of my cardboard shoe box from afar, softball games at Chelsea Park or near the Chelsea Pier and, last but not least, serving as altar boys."
