"What a great place to grow up.  Our lives were ruled by the seasons and activities... baseball, stickball, touch football, street hockey, hand ball, off the point, spinning tops, flipping baseball cards, pitching coins.  We hiked down to Leroy St. pool in the morning to get in at half price and hiked back up to Central Park in the afternoon to play hardball. God that pool water was never warm.  Actually going swimming in the Hudson.  Were we crazy or what... six or eight of us sneaking into the subway on one token squeezing into that enclosed turnstile on 14th St.? Imagine letting your kids walk to Central Park alone, jumping on the subway and heading out to Rockaway for the day.  Did anyone ever get hurt?"
